Diabetes and Amputation: How to Protect your Feet

Why does diabetes commonly lead to foot amputation?

It is because diabetes can lead to peripheral artery disease, which causes your blood vessels to narrow and reduces blood flow to your legs and feet. Reduced blood flow can slow wound healing. It can also make your body less effective at fighting infection. As a result, your wound may not heal.

It may also cause nerve damage, known as peripheral neuropathy. This could prevent you from feeling pain. Normally a person with an injury on the bottom of their foot, such as a blister, will change the way they walk, because you are going to protect that blistered spot until it heals up. People with a loss of sensation don’t do that. They will just walk right on top of that blister as though it wasn’t there. It can burst, become infected, and turn into a foot ulcer. That ulceration can go right down to the bone and become an avenue for infection into the whole foot. That’s what leads to amputations. The most common amputations in people with diabetes are the toes, feet, and lower legs.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take, here’s what you need to know to keep your feet healthy:

  1. Check Your Feet Regularly

The single most important thing that a person with diabetes can do to prevent a problem is to look at their feet every day, just as they comb their hair or brush their teeth. You can use a mirror to examine your feet or have a family member check your feet for you. If you’re not regularly checking your feet, start now. It only takes a few minutes each day. Make it a part of your morning or evening routine.

Look for blisters, cuts, cracks, sores, redness, wounds, bruising, blisters, and discoloration. Never  remove it by yourself, get assistance from a podiatrist or your doctor.

Regularly check your feet for sensation using a feather or other light object. It is also important to be sure the foot can sense the differences between hot/warm and cold water. Shower water can be first tested with the hand and then with the feet to identify any loss of temperature sensation.

  1. Protect Your Feet

Wear proper footwear at all times, which prevents injury and exposure to the elements. Don’t go barefoot, even around the house. The best shoes are ones that feel firm and secure on your feet but won’t restrict blood flow or sensation. Your doctor may recommend specially designed shoes (orthopedic shoes) that fit the exact shape of your feet, cushion your feet and evenly distribute weight on your feet.

It’s also equally important to wash your feet in lukewarm water, removing dead skin and harmful bacteria. Dry them gently, especially between the toes. Sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch between your toes to keep the skin dry. Use a moisturizing cream or lotion on the tops and bottoms of your feet to keep the skin soft.

Finally, trim your toenails once a week, which minimizes the possibility of fungal infections and the damage associated with ingrown nails. Trim your nails straight across, and try not to cut them too short.

  1. Increase Your Blood Flow

Don’t smoke. Smoking impairs circulation and reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. These circulatory problems can result in more-severe wounds and poor healing. Regular exercise can also improve your circulation, and something as simple as a daily bike ride can have a huge impact.

Wiggle your toes throughout the day and move your ankles frequently to keep the blood flowing in your feet. Avoid socks with tight elastic bands that reduce circulation

Eat a healthy diet of lean meats, fruits and vegetables, fiber, and whole grains. Avoid sugar-sweetened juice and soda.
