Obesity: The root of some diseases
November 10, 2017
What is Obesity?
Obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. It makes you more likely to have conditions like high blood pressure, stroke or heart problems.
Using BMI, you can determine if you are overweight or obese.
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
BMI is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. Defined as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2).
weight (kg): 50
Height (m): (1.46m)2 = 2.1316m2
50kg/2.1316m2 = 23.46 (BMI)
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
Obesity can be dangerous, it may be the root of some diseases though not everyone who is obese has all of these problems. The risk rises if you have a family history of one of these conditions.
Here are 7 conditions linked to Obesity.
- Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which blood sugar levels are above normal. High blood sugar is a major cause of heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, amputation, and blindness.
Losing weight and becoming more physically active can help control your blood sugar levels. Becoming more active may also reduce your need for diabetes medication.Fat cells may release hormones that affect cell growth, leading to cancer.
Cancer occurs when cells in one part of the body, such as the colon, grow abnormally or out of control.
Gaining weight as an adult increases the risk for several cancers, even if the weight gain doesn’t result in overweight or obesity. It isn’t known exactly how being overweight increases cancer risk. Fat cells may release hormones that affect cell growth, leading to cancer.
- Heart disease / Stroke
The most common type of heart disease happens when a blood vessel that carries blood to the heart becomes hard and narrow. A stroke happens when the flow of blood to a part of your brain stops, causing brain cells to die.
Overweight and obesity are known to increase blood pressure. High blood pressure is the leading cause of strokes. Excess weight also increases your chances of developing other problems linked to strokes, including high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and heart disease.
- Kidney Disease
Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter blood, removing extra water and waste products, which become urine. Your kidneys also help control blood pressure so that your body can stay healthy.
Obesity increases the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, the most common causes of chronic kidney disease.
If you are in the early stages of chronic kidney disease, losing weight may slow the disease and keep your kidneys healthier longer. You should also choose foods with less salt (sodium), keep your blood pressure under control, and keep your blood glucose in the target range.
Osteoarthritis is a common health problem that causes pain and stiffness in your joints. Carrying extra pounds places extra pressure on these joints and wears away the cartilage (tissue cushioning the joints) that normally protects them.
Weight loss can ease stress on the knees, hips, and lower back and may improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Gout is a disease that affects the joints. It happens when you have too much uric acid in your blood. The extra uric acid can form crystals that deposit in the joints.
Gout is more common in overweight people. The more you weigh, the more likely you are to get gout.
- Sleep Anea
Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person has one or more pauses in breathing during sleep. It cause a person to snore heavily and to briefly stop breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea may cause daytime sleepiness and make heart disease and stroke more likely.
Obesity is the most important risk factor for sleep apnea. A person who is overweight may have more fat stored around his or her neck. This may make the airway smaller.
