Nabi Tajima, 117
Born on August 4 1900, Nabi Tajima is the oldest verified person living in Japan, and lives in the city of Kagoshima. She had nine children (seven sons and two daughters), but by September 2015 she had more than 140 descendants including 28 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
According to the UK’s Mirror, she credits her long life to her diet of sushi, getting eight hours of sleep each night and relaxing. Japan is believed to have more than 50,000 people who have lived to be over 100 years old. This is often attributed to the country’s low-fat diet, which is rich in sushi and fish.
Violet Brown, 117
Violet Brown is Jamaica’s oldest living person and, at the age of 117 years and 273 days, is the second-oldest verified living person in the world. The supercentenarian, who is affectionately known as “Aunt V” to her family, was born on March 10 1900. According to her son, Harold Brown, Violet eats smaller meals, and never eats pork or chicken as key to her old age. She likes fish and mutton (sheep’s meat). Her diet contains plenty of locally-grown produce like sweet potatoes, breadfruit, oranges and mangoes.
Violet also attributes her age to her faith. In 2011, she that following the Ten Commandments was her secret to a long life – “Honor your mother and father so your days may be long.”
Ana Vela Rubio, 115
Ana Vela Rubio was born on October 30 1901, making her Spain’s oldest living person. The supercentenarian has two children, four grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
According to her daughter, “ Rubio’s compassion for others and positive attitude are what have kept her alive. She always sought the best for us, gave us the best education, has made us happy.”
Jessie Gallan, 109 Years Old
The 109-year-old woman is the oldest in Scotland, and her advice for staying alive for so long is: staying single and eating the same thing for many years. “My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They’re just more trouble than they’re worth,” she told the Daily Mail. “I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married.”
Evelyn Vigor, 111
Evelyn Vigor says the key to a long life is to have faith and stress less. The centenarian continued to ride horses well into her 80s and has remained positive despite fracturing her hips in her 90s and surviving breast cancer at 102. Ms. Vigor also credited her good genes and balanced lifestyle for her long life. ‘You can only get there by eating healthily. We used to go to bed early too. We looked after our heath as much as we could,’ she said.
Duranord Veillard, 110
New York resident Duranord Veillard, 110, starts each day with oatmeal, fruit, and a cup of tea and ends with fish and vegetables. According to USA Today, Veillard has always done five to seven pushups every morning, even now. He celebrated his latest birthday in February with his wife of 82 years, Jeanne, who turned 105 in May.
Ruth Coben, 103
Even in her 100s, New York City resident Ruth Coben lifts weights, practices Pilates once a week. She told Advanced Style, a fashion blog that features senior women, that her motto for long life is to celebrate every day and not look at the calendar. She also believes that as long as you are able to move, you can do some form of exercise.
