What is Scoliosis?
June 24, 2019
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown. About 3% of adolescents have scoliosis.
Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some spine deformities continue to get more severe as children grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
Causes
In as many as 80% of cases, doctors don’t find the exact reason for a curved spine. Scoliosis without a known cause is what doctors call “idiopathic.”
Some kinds of scoliosis do have clear causes. Doctors divide those curves into two types — structural and nonstructural.
In nonstructural scoliosis, the spine works normally, but looks curved. Why does this happen? There are a number of reasons, such as one leg’s being longer than the other, muscle spasms, and inflammations like appendicitis. When these problems are treated, this type of scoliosis often goes away.
In structural scoliosis, the curve of the spine is rigid and can’t be reversed.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of scoliosis may include:
– Uneven shoulders
– One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
– Uneven waist
– One hip higher than the other
