Should You Be Donating Blood?
January 22, 2022

Did you know that besides saving a life by donating blood the patients aren’t the only one benefiting from the act. By regularly donating blood you also get multiple health benefits.
Blood acts as a way for oxygen and nutrients to reach different organs in the body, which makes it essential to one’s survival. According to statistics one blood donation can save as many as three lives.
Benefits of Donating Blood
1. Physical and Emotional health
Donating blood can reduce stress and improve your emotional well-being. It also helps your physical health by reducing risk of diseases.

2. Free Health Check Up
Before donating blood, you’ll need to undergo a medical check-up to make sure that you’re healthy enough to be a donor. At the same time, this means that you’ll know if you have potential health issues early on.
During the check-up, you’ll have to answer questions relating to your medical history and undergo health screening procedures to check your pulse, temperature, blood pressure, and blood count using a pathology test—all these for free. This form of free medical test is definitely something you must take advantage of.
3. Reduces Risk of Diseases
Some studies show that donating blood reduces the risk of cancer, heart and liver diseases. And it lowers cholesterol levels.

4. Maintains Body Weight
When you donate blood, you’re also getting rid of excess amounts of lipids or fatty substances in your blood. This is important so that fat deposits don’t accumulate in your arteries, lowering your cholesterol level and your risk for heart disease.
Risk Factors

Blood donation is safe for healthy adults. There’s no risk of contracting disease. New, sterile equipment is used for each donor.
Some people may feel nauseous, lightheaded, or dizzy after donating blood. If this happens, it should only last a few minutes. You can lie down with your feet up until you feel better.
You may also experience some bleeding at the site of the needle. Applying pressure and raising your arm for a couple of minutes will usually stop this. You may develop a bruise at the site.

Who can donate blood?
Here are some important things to know before you donate:
– You need to be 17 or older to donate whole blood. Some states allow you to donate at 16 with parental consent.
– You have to weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate.
– You need to provide information about medical conditions and any medications you’re taking. These may affect your eligibility to donate blood.
– You must wait at least 8 weeks between whole blood donations and 16 weeks between double red cell donations.
– Platelet donations can be made every 7 days, up to 24 times per year.
