The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ that’s located in the front of the neck, wrapped around the trachea. The thyroid makes hormones that help control many vital functions of your body. Its job is to release and control hormones that control metabolism which is a process where the food you take is transformed into energy.
2 Main types of Thyroid disease
Hyperthyroidism – also called overactive thyroid, is a condition where your thyroid makes and releases high levels of thyroid hormone. This condition can make your metabolism speed up. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite and anxiety. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, beta blockers and surgery.
