The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ that’s located in the front of the neck, wrapped around the trachea. The thyroid makes hormones that help control many vital functions of your body. Its job is to release and control hormones that control metabolism which is a process where the food you take is transformed into energy.

Hyperthyroidism – also called overactive thyroid, is a condition where your thyroid makes and releases high levels of thyroid hormone. This condition can make your metabolism speed up. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite and anxiety. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, beta blockers and surgery.

Conditions that can cause hyperthyroidism include:
– Grave’s diseases
– Nodules
– Thyroiditis
– Excessive Iodine

Hypothyroidism – is a common condition where the thyroid doesn’t create and release enough thyroid hormone into your bloodstream. This makes your metabolism slow down. Also called underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism can make you feel tired, gain weight and be unable to tolerate cold temperatures. The main treatment for hypothyroidism is hormone replacement therapy.
Conditions that can cause hypothyroidism include:
– Thyroiditis
– Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
– Postpartum Thyroiditis
– Iodine Deficiency
